This graduate-level course provides an in-depth exploration of the Horn of Africa, covering Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Sudan, South Sudan, and Kenya. It examines the region’s historical evolution, focusing on early state formation, the influence of Islam, and the impact of Western colonialism on current political and social structures.

Eğitim Detayları

This graduate-level course provides an in-depth exploration of the Horn of Africa, covering Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Sudan, South Sudan, and Kenya. It examines the region’s historical evolution, focusing on early state formation, the influence of Islam, and the impact of Western colonialism on current political and social structures.

 

Students will engage in multidisciplinary analysis of contemporary issues such as governance, conflict, migration, economic development, and environmental challenges, with a focus on how global powers and regional organizations shape the Horn’s strategic importance. 

By critically analyzing key themes through political science, international relations, economics, and anthropology, students will gain a nuanced understanding of the region’s complexities, equipping them with the skills to contribute to scholarly and policy discussions on the Horn of Africa’s future.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate the historical and geopolitical factors shaping the Horn of Africa.
  2. Analyze complex political and security dynamics, including state failure, authoritarianism, and peace-building.
  3. Engage with theoretical frameworks and apply them to regional case studies.
  4. Conduct independent research on key issues such as migration, diaspora engagement, and external influence in the Horn of Africa.
  5. Formulate informed policy recommendations for addressing socio-political and developmental challenges in the region.
