The research report titled “The Situation of Ugandan Graduates from Turkey” focuses on analyzing the advantages and challenges faced by Ugandans who studied in Turkey after graduation.

Within the scope of the research, interviews were conducted with 12 graduates, aiming to analyze the experience of studying in Turkey in detail. Based on the individual views of the participants, inferences were made about being an international student in Turkey and after graduation.

The findings on the process are presented under 10 different headings ranging from the possibility of returning to Uganda after graduation to employment opportunities:

When we look at the decisions of Ugandans studying in Turkey about returning to their country after graduation, it is seen that most graduates decide to return to their country due to reasons such as their responsibilities in Uganda, the desire of their families and the worrisome features of staying in Turkey.

Interviews with participants on the benefits of Turkish language education revealed that students who gained language and cultural familiarity by studying in Turkey see this as an advantage after returning home. Advantages such as having the opportunity to work in Turkish companies operating in Uganda and having knowledge about the systems and practices in Turkey were mentioned. Participants stated that language skills increase their competitiveness in the labor market.

"A notable aspect of employment in Turkish companies is the versatility required by job roles. Graduates also noted that working with Turkish employers often entailed a variety of responsibilities beyond their initial job description."

Inspired by their educational experiences in Turkey, many Ugandans who graduated from Turkey have gone on to become self-employed. They reported that they developed entrepreneurial skills and were motivated to become self-employed during their time in Turkey.

In terms of job opportunities, the graduates emphasized that the cultural connection and common language gained from graduating from Turkey was an important factor for working in Turkish companies.

In the interviews on the challenges faced by the graduates, it was concluded that firstly, receiving Turkish education was a challenge for the students during the education process. After graduation, it was mentioned that having a Turkish diploma can sometimes cause problems in Uganda. Graduates stated that they sometimes felt the need to explain themselves more in the process of finding a job because of their Turkish diplomas.

"In short, Turkish graduates in Uganda face similar challenges as local and international graduates in the competitive job market. While there are initial advantages in certain sectors, such as opportunities in Turkish companies, the overall problem is expressed as high competition and the need for graduates to demonstrate their skills and resilience in the workforce. Despite these challenges, Turkish graduates are seen as competitive and skilled individuals who contribute positively to the Ugandan job market."

In the post-graduation interviews, alumni mentioned the importance of institutional support in the process of finding a job. They suggested that an alumni association where alumni can come together and facilitate access to employment opportunities and the Turkish embassy's initiatives in this direction are important.
